Matchup Summary (Win Condition and Game Plan)
This matchup is about refusing to challenge Byleth’s long Fair, Bair, Forward Tilt, and Side B at the exact range they want. Byleth controls space extremely well from the outside, but once Luigi gets inside that tipper shell, grab, Nair, Dtilt, and Up B can swing the stock immediately. Fireball and low, grounded entry routes matter here because direct jump-ins just keep running into the weapon wall.
Byleth’s close-range rotation is not especially fast, so the reward for getting in is large. As the table shows, Jab 1-3, Rapid Jab Finisher, all tilts, dash attack, all smashes, Nair, Fair, Bair, Uair, Dair, Neutral B, Side B, and grounded Up B are all punishable by OOS Nair (6f), Up B (6f), OOS Uair (8f), Up Smash (9f), or grab, which means Luigi should turn every real block into damage instead of only trying to win raw neutral.
The trap is trying to force those same punishes while still standing too far out. If the spacing is wrong, Luigi just swings into another weapon reset and gets pushed back into the worst part of neutral again. When the direct punish does not reach, it is more stable to track the landing with Uair, Bair, and dash grab so the second touch happens from closer range.
The win condition is to corner Byleth and keep the low mobility exposed long enough for Up B, Up Smash, or Bair to finish the stock. Deep offstage chases into the Up B tether reversal are less reliable than staying onstage and forcing the ledge sequence to continue.

Win Condition Checklist
- Use
Fireballand low entry routes to force shield or retreat first so Luigi does not spend neutral jumping directly into Byleth’s tipper wall. - Punish Jab 1-3, Rapid Jab Finisher, all tilts, Dash Attack, all smashes,
Nair,Fair,Bair,Uair,Dair,Neutral B,Side B, and groundedUp Bon shield withOOS Nair (6f),Up B (6f), grab, orUp Smash. - If the tipper spacing makes the direct punish miss, do not force it; cover the landing with
Uair,Bair, and dash grab so the second touch happens at close range. - Keep Byleth cornered and finish from ledge pressure with
Up B,Up Smash, andBairinstead of overcommitting offstage.
Actions to Avoid
- Repeatedly jumping straight into
Fair,Bair, or Forward Tilt and letting Byleth play the exact spacing game they want. - Missing guaranteed punishes on blocked jabs, tilts, dash attack, smashes, aerials, or
Side Band giving a low-mobility character free resets. - Swinging from too far away at a tippered move and getting pushed back into the same long-range wall again.
- Chasing too deep offstage into
Up Btether reversal angles and giving up the cleaner kill route from ledge control.
