Matchup Summary (Win Condition and Game Plan)

Sephiroth can narrow Pichu’s approach lanes very early with Masamune’s tipper spacing, Shadow Flare, and the Flare spells, so if Pichu keeps jumping in from the same height and straight on, his extreme lightness plus recoil damage quickly turns one mistake into kill percent.
However, Sephiroth’s whiff lag is still large when those narrow hitboxes miss, and his close-range defense is not limitless. Pichu is more stable when he uses his tiny body to slip around the tip of forward tilt and fair, then uses Thunder Jolt and walking to pin down shield and jump before cashing in a single close-range win with nair, bair, or grab into ledge pressure.
The frame table also shows jab 1-3, up tilt, down tilt, dash attack, all smash attacks, fair, bair, uair, dair, neutral B, side B, up B (1)(2), and down B (1) are all punishable by OOS nair, OOS uair, OOS bair, up smash, or grab, so Pichu has enough reward once he makes Sephiroth hit shield. It fits this matchup better to cash out on those heavier commitments than to swing back at every tipper forward tilt or shallow nair and bleed extra recoil.
Kills are more reliable when Pichu does not rush center-stage trades, but instead layers Thunder Jolt and movement feints at ledge, then removes escape routes with up smash, bair, Thunder, and Quick Attack edgeguards. That shortens the time spent fighting Sephiroth after Wing activates.

Win Condition Checklist

  • Do not jump straight into tipper range at the same height. Use the tiny hurtbox and walking drift to skew the axis of forward tilt, fair, and Shadow Flare first, then pin down the next jump or shield with Thunder Jolt.
  • After blocking jab 1-3, up tilt, down tilt, dash attack, any smash attack, fair, bair, uair, dair, neutral B, side B, up B (1)(2), or down B (1), take the punish with OOS nair, OOS uair, OOS bair, up smash, or grab so Sephiroth’s long buttons never end cheaply.
  • When tipper forward tilt or shallow nair lands too far out, do not overforce the punish. Move to the landing spot or retreat path and keep the next opening short and clean instead.
  • At ledge, use Thunder Jolt to shake up neutral getup and ledge jump, then cover the higher recovery line and Wing jump with bair, up smash, and Thunder.
  • Once Wing is active, refuse raw damage trades and use Quick Attack to change positions so one hit does not let Sephiroth run the full comeback sequence.

Actions to Avoid

  • Do not keep entering from straight ahead at the same height and get clipped by Masamune’s tipper or bair for an early stock.
  • Do not throw OOS answers at every tipper forward tilt or shallow nair and stack recoil plus counterhits when the punish never reaches.
  • Do not panic against the Flare spells or Shadow Flare, add extra full hops, and give Sephiroth the anti-air fair or up tilt he is waiting for.
  • Do not panic for the kill after Wing activates and start brawling in center stage into a hard read from up smash, bair, or down B.
