Matchup Summary (Win Condition and Game Plan)
Mario is threatening here because fireball, nair, uair, and grab let him start fast damage loops the moment Wario gets pinned into a straightforward approach.
But Mario does not have overwhelming range, so if Wario keeps shifting his aerial position and refuses to rush blindly through fireball timing, he can still win the close-range scramble on his own terms.
Because of that, Wario should treat this matchup as a spacing and drift battle first, then cash out once he gets in rather than forcing repeated direct entries through Mario’s preferred mid-range.
The clearest shield-punish points are jab, forward tilt, up tilt, down tilt, dash attack, the smash attacks, fair, dair, Neutral B, and Side B, where Up B (6f), OOS Nair (7f), and OOS Fair (8f) matter most.
By contrast, nair, bair, and uair are very safe, so trying to punish all of them directly only helps Mario keep the advantage.
Mario’s up smash and fair conversions become very dangerous once the stock gets old, so Wario wants to use corner pressure, bair, up smash, and Waft proactively instead of waiting until every scramble is lethal.

Win Condition Checklist
- Do not rush through every fireball. Change your jump height and drift so Mario has to commit his follow-up first.
- When you block jab, forward tilt, up tilt, down tilt, dash attack, forward smash, up smash, down smash, fair, dair, Neutral B, or Side B, immediately choose between Up B (6f), OOS Nair (7f), and OOS Fair (8f).
- When you block nair, bair, or uair, do not force the instant punish. Track the landing or drift reset instead.
- Once Mario is at the ledge, keep respecting reversal Up B and fair but continue covering jump and standard getup with bair pressure.
- Use Waft to create the stock lead before Mario’s late-stock anti-air and fair threat make every scramble too expensive.
Actions to Avoid
- Taking the same high jump over fireball every time and giving Mario easy uair and fair routes.
- Trying to shield-punish every nair, bair, and uair, whiffing, and letting Mario keep the scramble.
- Overchasing offstage and running into reversal Up B or fair instead of keeping ledge control.
- Fishing for raw kill bairs in center and getting anti-aired by up smash.
- Waiting passively only for Waft and giving Mario free time to build juggle and corner pressure.
