Matchup Summary (Win Condition and Game Plan)

This matchup looks good for Zero Suit Samus at mid-range, but it gets messy fast if she forgets that Wario’s low profile and air drift make lazy Fair, Nair, and Flip Jump routes miss. The longer the close-range scramble lasts, the more Waft pressure distorts every decision, so Zero Suit has to make Wario spend time fighting for entry instead of getting free brawl situations.
Wario is dangerous once Nair, Fair, or Down Tilt starts a combo, but his direct defensive punishment is not especially large and his range is limited. If Zero Suit keeps the tip space controlled with Zair, Paralyzer, and pullback movement, Wario is forced to restart the approach over and over, which makes his landings and ledge situations much easier to trap.
The frame table shows Jab 2, Jab, Forward Tilt, Up Tilt, Down Tilt, Dash Attack, every smash attack, Fair, Bair, Dair, and Down B are punishable through Up B (6f) or OOS Fair / Uair (9f). By contrast, Nair and Uair are not stable shield-punish spots, and Side B and Up B are usually better answered by preserving position than by forcing the immediate swing.
Kills are more repeatable from landing traps into Up B, ledge Bair, and paralysis confirms than from center-stage hard reads. Once Waft becomes active, simply reducing point-blank scrambles and leaning harder on mid-range whiff punishment lowers the upset factor a lot.

Win Condition Checklist

  • Use Zair, Paralyzer, and pullback movement to narrow the approach angle for Wario’s Nair, Fair, and Down Tilt without giving away tip space.
  • After blocking Jab 2, Jab, Forward Tilt, Up Tilt, Down Tilt, Dash Attack, any smash attack, Fair, Bair, Dair, or Down B, take the listed punish with Up B (6f) and OOS Fair / Uair (9f).
  • Do not force shield punishes on Nair, Uair, Side B, or Up B. Hold position first, then trap the relanding or push to ledge.
  • Take stocks through landing-trap Up B, ledge Bair, and paralysis confirms, and reduce close-range scramble time once Waft is online.
  • Mix Flip Jump between escape and entry so it is not repeatedly intercepted from the same height.

Actions to Avoid

  • Forgetting Wario’s low profile and autopiloting Fair, Nair, or Flip Jump into clean whiffs.
  • Swinging after every blocked Nair or Uair and letting Wario turn the miss into more Waft time and more pressure.
  • Overforcing immediate punishes on Side B or Up B and giving up the positional advantage that was already winning.
  • Staying in point-blank scrambles once Waft is active and losing the stock off a single read.
