Bowser vs Olimar

Olimar Matchup (Bowser)

Bowser vs Olimar

Bowser vs Olimar is a matchup where Bowser cannot afford to sit still under Pikmin pressure, but once he gets in he can blow through Olimar's weaker close-range defense with Up B, command grab pressure, and ledge damage.

Matchup Summary (Win Condition and Game Plan)

Olimar can make this matchup miserable if Bowser just blocks and waits, because Pikmin tosses and color-dependent pressure chew through Bowser’s large body and keep resetting the spacing.
But Olimar’s close-range defense is much thinner than his mid-range control, so once Bowser gets in, Up B and command grab pressure can turn one opening into real corner damage immediately.
Because of that, Bowser has to advance with walking, short jumps, and occasional Fire Breath instead of giving Olimar endless time to organize colors and spacing for free.
The main shield-punish points are jab, forward tilt, up tilt, down tilt, dash attack, nair, and Side B, where Up B (6f) matters most, with Grab (10f) and OOS Nair (11f) helping when they reach.
By contrast, many Pikmin-assisted swings and the smash attacks are awkward to judge only from shield numbers, so forcing a punish there often gives Olimar the reset he wants.
Bowser usually wins this matchup by breaking the setup cycle and cashing out at the ledge with Side B, fair, down smash, and close-range Up B before Olimar gets to rebuild the Pikmin wall.

Win Condition Checklist

  • Do not sit still under Pikmin toss. Walk, short hop, and mix in Fire Breath so Olimar cannot organize spacing for free.
  • When you block jab, forward tilt, up tilt, down tilt, dash attack, nair, or purple Side B, default to Up B (6f) first and use Grab (10f) or OOS Nair (11f) only when they clearly reach better.
  • When Olimar loses Pikmin count, immediately value stage gain over resetting to full neutral and deny the re-pluck window.
  • Once you get close, use Up B and Side B pressure to force panic between shield and scramble, then carry that momentum to the ledge.
  • Look for kills from ledge Side B, fair, down smash, and close-range Up B more than from center-stage haymakers.

Actions to Avoid

  • Shielding every Pikmin toss and accepting a slow losing game against white and purple pressure.
  • Overcommitting to one huge read after getting in and letting Olimar roll or drift back out to reset.
  • Trying to punish every Pikmin-assisted smash or aerial blindly out of shield and giving Olimar back the spacing.
  • Chasing too deep offstage and exposing Bowser’s large body to a reversal juggle.
  • Ignoring Pikmin color and count, then repeatedly eating the exact purple poke or white damage cycle you should have denied.
