Chrom vs Toon Link

Toon Link Matchup (Chrom)

Chrom vs Toon Link

Chrom vs Toon Link is about refusing to force through the projectile lanes and then using sword pressure to trap landing and ledge once Chrom finally gets in.

Matchup Summary (Win Condition and Game Plan)

Toon Link is strong at stopping horizontal approach lines with arrows, boomerang, and bomb, but his close-range defense and landing resistance are much weaker than his zoning shell.
Chrom should not try to slash through every projectile lane. The stable plan is dash shield, low jumps, and then turning one clean opening into extended landing traps and ledge pressure.
On shield, Jab 3, Forward Tilt, Up Tilt, Dash Attack, the smash attacks, Down Air, and Up B (1) are punishable, and even Up Air can be checked by OOS Up Air.
By contrast, Neutral Air, Forward Air, Back Air, Z Air, and spaced Side B are usually better handled by taking space and covering the next movement instead of forcing a punish.
Because Chrom’s offstage risk is so high, he should finish stocks with juggle routes and ledge trapping more often than deep edgeguards.

Win Condition Checklist

  • Use dash shield and low-commitment jumps to close space instead of swinging into every projectile lane
  • After shielding Jab 3, Forward Tilt, Up Tilt, Dash Attack, the smash attacks, Down Air, or Up B (1), punish with OOS Uair, OOS Nair, Up B, and Grab
  • After Neutral Air, Forward Air, Back Air, Z Air, or spaced Side B, prioritize taking ground and trapping the next landing or reset
  • Once Toon Link is above you, keep juggling with Up Air and Up Tilt, then convert the stock at ledge rather than overcommitting offstage

Actions to Avoid

  • Repeatedly swinging Forward Tilt or Forward Air through projectile gaps and taking damage just to enter
  • Mashing after blocked Neutral Air or Forward Air when there is no real punish and giving Toon Link another reset
  • Backing off after the first hit instead of exploiting Toon Link’s weak landing state
  • Chasing too deep offstage and turning a winning ledge situation into Chrom’s own recovery problem
