This matchup is decided by whether Cloud can lock Luigi into midrange with sword reach and Limit before Luigi gets a close-range opening from grab, neutral air, or down tilt and turns it into explosive damage or a kill confirm.
Luigi’s air drift and disjoint are both limited, and he often has to walk or throw fireballs his way forward, so Cloud can bait rushed entries with walk shield, down tilt, spaced back air, and visible Limit charge.
As the table shows, jab strings, forward tilt, up tilt, dash attack, every smash attack, forward air, down air, neutral B, side B, and down B are all punishable by Up B (7f) or OOS Nair (8f), while down tilt, neutral air, back air, up air, and Z air are poor places to force an immediate shield punish.

Win Condition Checklist

  • Cloud should show Limit charge in center stage, then hold Luigi outside point-blank grab range with walk shield, down tilt, and spaced back air instead of volunteering close scrambles.
  • Cloud should always reclaim the turn with Up B (7f) or OOS Nair (8f) after shielding jab strings, forward tilt, up tilt, dash attack, smash attacks, forward air, down air, neutral B, side B, or down B.
  • Cloud should not force a punish after shielding down tilt, neutral air, back air, up air, or Z air, and should instead cover Luigi’s retreat, landing, or jump with the next sword swing.
  • Once Luigi is cornered, Cloud should trap side B and Up B recoveries with back air, down tilt, up smash, Limit Blade Beam, or Limit Climhazzard, and finish the stock without chasing too deep.

Actions to Avoid

  • Cloud should not jump in high over fireball and let Luigi run his close-range reversals through neutral air, up air, or Up B.
  • Cloud should not sit in shield at point-blank range and hand Luigi the grab starter that makes the matchup volatile in the first place.
