Matchup Summary (Win Condition and Game Plan)
This matchup is about whether Dr. Mario can get through Gordo and Bair control without surrendering center stage. Dr. Mario is not winning a long chase, but Dedede’s huge hurtbox and weak close-range rotation mean that one clean entry can become heavy damage immediately through down throw, Nair, Uair, and Tornado. The value of every grounded opening in center stage is unusually high here.
The danger is what happens once Dr. Mario gets pushed out. Dedede’s ledgetraps, Bair, Up Tilt, and Gordo pressure all punish Dr. Mario’s short recovery very hard, so one overeager jump-in can turn directly into a stock deficit. The goal is not to rush forward nonstop. It is to hold center, use pill and shield to clear the first obstacle, and only commit once Dedede has actually shown Fair, Uair, Dash Attack, or a hammer swing.
The frame table shows that Jab 1 and 2, Forward Tilt, Up Tilt, Down Tilt, Dash Attack, all smash attacks, Fair, Uair, Dair, Side B, Up B, and Down B are all punishable by Dr. Mario’s 3f Up B into aerials, Up Smash, and grab. Those punishes matter a lot because Dedede’s weight means random hits are not enough by themselves. By contrast, Gordo pressure and shallow Neutral Air are much less straightforward on shield, so panicking into an early swing usually hands the turn back.
Dr. Mario wins by holding center, taking the real punish windows, and converting them into large damage or short ledge sequences before Dedede can reestablish offstage pressure. Forcing a deep edgeguard is much less important than repeatedly pushing Dedede back out and keeping your own recovery from becoming the matchup’s deciding factor.

Win Condition Checklist
- Do not challenge Gordo and Bair control recklessly; use pill and shield to clear the first layer, then enter once Dedede has committed.
- When you get in, maximize each opening with down throw, Nair, Uair, and Tornado because center-stage touches are the matchup’s biggest reward.
- Punish Jab 1 and 2, Forward Tilt, Up Tilt, Down Tilt, Dash Attack, all smash attacks, Fair, Uair, Dair, Side B, Up B, and Down B on shield with Up B (3f) and the follow-up OOS options listed in the table.
- Respect Gordo and shallow Nair when the punish is unclear, and choose center-stage stability over a desperate swing.
- Close stocks through short ledge sequences, Bair, Up Smash, Down B, and shield punishes instead of overchasing offstage.
Actions to Avoid
- Trying to jump straight through Gordo and Bair walls and getting pushed to ledge before Dr. Mario has started his offense.
- Burning Tornado or panic aerials from disadvantage while already near the edge and feeding Dedede’s ledgetrap.
- Missing the real punish windows on Forward Tilt, Dash Attack, Up Smash, or Down B and letting the game drag into a pure weight war.
- Chasing too far offstage for a kill and exposing Dr. Mario’s own recovery to Bair and Gordo reversals.
