Matchup Summary (Win Condition and Game Plan)
Ridley is comfortable holding midrange with Forward Air, Back Air, Neutral Air, Forward Tilt, and Plasma Breath, and once Luigi gets pushed offstage Ridley’s multiple jumps plus long hitboxes can keep that advantage going into edgeguards.
That makes the matchup much harder when Luigi tries to force contact from far away with full hops or straight-line dashes at the same height, because the tail and wings usually win before Luigi’s shorter range can start.
The upside is that Ridley is huge and much weaker in close-range scrambles and combo defense. The frame table shows that Jab 1-3, Forward Tilt, Up Tilt, Down Tilt, Dash Attack, every smash attack, Neutral Air, Forward Air, Back Air, Up Air, Down Air, Up B, and Down B are all punishable by OOS Nair (6f) or Up B (6f), with Grab (10f) and Up Smash (9f) also reaching often. If Luigi gets inside the tail once with Fireball and shield walking, he can convert that single entry into Down Throw or Neutral Air starters and create a large damage swing on Ridley’s body.
At the same time, Plasma Breath gets much safer at longer ranges and Side B is not a spot where Luigi should expect a simple shield punish every time, so trying to stop everything on the spot usually loses to the next layer.
The stable plan is to punish only the clearly unsafe aerials and grounded buttons, then cover the landing or retreat path when the direct punish is not there. Because Luigi’s own recovery is one of the matchup’s real risks, it is more repeatable to finish stocks with vertical throw confirms, Up B out of shield, ledge Back Air, and Up Smash than to overchase deep offstage.

Win Condition Checklist
- Do not full hop straight into the front of Forward Air, Back Air, or Plasma Breath; use Fireball and shield walking to get inside Ridley’s tail once.
- After blocking Jab 1-3, Forward Tilt, Up Tilt, Down Tilt, Dash Attack, any smash attack, Neutral Air, Forward Air, Back Air, Up Air, Down Air, Up B, or Down B, answer reliably with OOS Nair (6f) or Up B (6f).
- Once grab or Neutral Air connects, do not release advantage early; extend Down Throw routes and Up Air chases on Ridley’s large hurtbox all the way to landing traps or the ledge.
- Do not force a direct answer to every Plasma Breath or Side B. When the first punish does not exist, take space at the landing point or retreat route so Ridley cannot comfortably reset midrange.
- In kill percent, prioritize ledgetrapping over deep edgeguards and close the stock with Up B punishes, ledge Back Air, Up Smash, or catches on Ridley’s forced landing back onstage.
Actions to Avoid
- Do not challenge Ridley’s Forward Air and tail wall from far away with same-height full hops or straight dashes.
- Do not try to hard-stop every Plasma Breath or Side B on the spot and give Ridley another midrange reset when the punish is not actually guaranteed.
- Do not back off too early after finally getting in; Ridley’s size means Luigi usually gets more from Down Throw routes and landing traps than from a single hit.
- Do not chase too deep offstage into multiple jumps, Back Air, or projectile reversals and volunteer Luigi’s weaker recovery route.
