Toon Link Matchup (Luigi)

Luigi vs Toon Link

Luigi vs Toon Link is about refusing rushed aerial entries through the slow projectile wall, then turning each grounded step forward into close-range damage.

Matchup Summary (Win Condition and Game Plan)

This matchup gets much harder the moment Luigi tries to leap over Toon Link’s Bow, Boomerang, and Bomb layers on autopilot. Luigi’s air drift is slow enough that once the jump arc is read, Toon Link can often turn that one guess into dash attack, up smash, or uair juggle pressure. The first objective is not to erase every projectile. It is to use walk shield, small stops, and well-timed fireballs to change the lane and steal one grounded step forward at a time.
Once Luigi reaches close range, the matchup changes sharply. Toon Link does not want to box for long at point-blank range, and his grab is slow there, but his Up B out of shield is still a real deterrent. Luigi should therefore keep the pressure compact with nair, down tilt, and grab, then convert that one opening into damage rather than repeatedly tapping Toon Link’s shield with shallow pressure.
The table shows Jab 1-3, Forward Tilt, Up Tilt, Dash Attack, every smash attack, Uair, Dair, Up B (1), Down Tilt, Fair, and even close Neutral B or Side B are punishable by OOS Nair (6f) or Up B (6f). By contrast, Nair, Bair, and Z Air are much harder to punish in place, so forcing an immediate answer after blocking them often just loses to pullback movement or a fresh projectile sequence. Covering the next landing or retreat is usually the better second step.
Kills are more stable when Luigi carries Toon Link to ledge and closes with Up Smash, Bair, Up B, or the ledge sequence after Forward Throw instead of hard-forcing center-stage Up B reads. Toon Link is floaty enough to struggle when juggled and his recovery can be stressed, but Luigi still should not overchase and turn his own recovery into the problem. Holding ledge and narrowing the return route is the safer finish.

Win Condition Checklist

  • Do not jump straight into Bow, Boomerang, and Bomb lanes. Use walk shield and fireballs to shift the projectile path first, then close distance a little at a time.
  • Once Luigi gets in, respect Toon Link’s Up B out of shield and keep the pressure short with nair, down tilt, and grab so the opening turns into throw damage or the next landing trap.
  • After blocking Jab 1-3, Forward Tilt, Up Tilt, Down Tilt, Dash Attack, any smash attack, Fair, Uair, Dair, Up B (1), or close Neutral B and Side B, take the listed punish with OOS Nair (6f) or Up B (6f) first.
  • After blocking Nair, Bair, or Z Air, do not force the in-place punish. Chase the retreat jump, landing, or backstep with uair, bair, or dash grab for the second touch instead.
  • At kill percent, stop dragging out center-stage guesses and walk Toon Link to ledge for Up Smash, Bair, Up B, or the ledge pressure after Forward Throw.

Actions to Avoid

  • Full hopping straight into the lane where Bow, Boomerang, and Bomb are already layered and letting dash attack or uair cover the landing for free.
  • Finally getting in and then feeding the turn back to Toon Link’s Up B out of shield by repeating shallow aerial pressure on block.
  • Trying to punish every Nair, Bair, and Z Air on the spot and getting reset by the pullback or the next projectile because the punish never truly reached.
  • Chasing too deep offstage, shrinking Luigi’s own recovery options, and throwing away a position that should have been won by ledge control.
