Matchup Summary (Win Condition and Game Plan)
Luigi can flip the game instantly off grab, nair, down tilt, and Up B, so if Meta Knight keeps pressing into close shield range for too long, the lower single-hit damage gets punished hard by one lost guess. In particular, Luigi’s Up B and Cyclone make careless shield pressure and greedy landing pressure much more dangerous than they look.
However, Luigi’s grounded options and larger specials do have clear punish windows. Jab 1-3, forward tilt, up tilt, dash attack, every smash, fair, dair, Neutral B, Side B, grounded Up B, and Down B are all punishable on shield with OOS Dair (7f), Up B (7f), Up Smash (8f), OOS Nair (9f), or OOS Uair (9f) at minimum. This matchup gets much better when Meta Knight commits to cutting off only the moments where Luigi has to step forward.
On the other hand, down tilt, nair, bair, uair, and zair are comparatively safe, and forcing a punish there often just feeds Luigi the exact point-blank scramble he wants. Meta Knight should use extra jumps and lateral movement to shift around Fireball and Luigi’s approach angle, then convert nair or up tilt into juggles that already cover the landing and the route toward the ledge. Once you touch him, keeping him from escaping horizontally matters more than overextending on shield.
The kill plan is more reliable through vertical carry and edgeguards than through center-stage brawling. Luigi’s recovery routes through Up B and Side B are readable, so the stable route is to threaten bair or Up B offstage without overchasing, then force another guess with ledge traps like Down Smash and grounded anti-air as he returns.

Win Condition Checklist
- Do not stay in Luigi’s grab range longer than necessary. Use extra jumps and horizontal drift to offset Fireball timing and start the interaction with nair or up tilt first.
- After shielding jab 1-3, forward tilt, up tilt, dash attack, every smash, fair, dair, Neutral B, Side B, grounded Up B, or Down B, take the immediate punish with OOS Dair (7f) or Up B (7f).
- After shielding down tilt, nair, bair, uair, or zair, do not force the first punish. Track the landing or retreat and win the second touch into vertical carry.
- At kill percent, prioritize uair strings, bair, edgeguards, and ledge traps like Down Smash over forcing center-stage Up B guesses.
Actions to Avoid
- Repeatedly pressing into Luigi’s close shield and handing over grab or Up B reversal chances.
- Swinging immediately after every down tilt, nair, bair, uair, and zair shield contact and letting Luigi keep the point-blank scramble.
- Jumping through Fireball on the same height every time and giving Luigi a predictable nair or grab entry.
- Chasing too deep offstage and getting clipped by Side B drift or Up B positioning before your own recovery is secure.
