Matchup Summary (Win Condition and Game Plan)
This matchup turns on whether King Dedede gets to pin Mr. Game & Watch in place with Gordo and back air long enough to push him to the ledge and land one heavy hit, or whether Mr. Game & Watch lifts Dedede first with Fair bomb, Uair, and retreating movement and keeps the juggle going.
Dedede’s weight, recovery, and raw power make back air, up tilt, smash attacks, and Super Dedede Jump landings extremely dangerous, but his body size and ground speed still leave him vulnerable once he has to move first, so Mr. Game & Watch is better off splitting the ground with Fair bomb and Down Tilt, then converting the first opening into Up B pressure and anti-landing sequences. Chef is also especially strong at ledge because it pressures both Dedede’s multiple jumps and his Up B landing route.
The table shows that jab, Forward Tilt, Up Tilt, Down Tilt, Dash Attack, every smash attack, Forward Air, Up Air, Down Air, Side B, Up B, and Down B all lose to Up B (3f), with Grab (10f) and OOS Nair (10f) often available behind it. Neutral Air and Back Air are effectively Up B-only punish spots, so forcing slower shield punishes there is less stable than taking the turn with Up B and waiting for the next landing or Gordo toss.
For kills, it is more repeatable to burn jumps and airdodges with Uair first, then loop Chef, Down Smash, Back Air, and Up Smash at the ledge, than to overchase his multiple jumps and Up B offstage. The basic rule is to value ledgetrap control over deep edgeguards.

Win Condition Checklist
- Do not stop in front of Gordo. Use Fair bomb, Down Tilt, and retreating movement to split Dedede’s ground path and make him jump or swing back air first.
- After blocking jab, Forward Tilt, Up Tilt, Down Tilt, Dash Attack, any smash attack, Forward Air, Up Air, Down Air, Side B, Up B, or Down B, take the turn immediately with Up B (3f).
- After blocking Neutral Air or Back Air, do not force slower shield punishes; use Up B to reset advantage, then cover the landing or next Gordo toss with Uair, Fair, or Bair.
- Once Dedede is above you, do not rush the kill. Use Uair to force out extra jumps and airdodge before moving the stock to ledge.
- At ledge, split Chef, Down Smash, Back Air, and Up Smash over getup timing and Up B landings, and stay onstage unless the offstage finish is clearly free.
Actions to Avoid
- Do not freeze behind shield just because Gordo is out and let back air plus hammer pressure take space for free.
- Do not insist on slow shield punishes after every blocked Neutral Air or Back Air and give Dedede a way out through drift or landing mix.
- Do not abandon Uair pressure early just because Dedede is heavy and still living; forcing a fast kill attempt is how you walk into his strongest landing buttons.
- Do not chase his multiple jumps or Super Dedede Jump too deep offstage and lose to reversal damage while playing a much lighter character.
