Olimar vs Lucas

Lucas Matchup (Olimar)

Olimar vs Lucas

Olimar vs Lucas is a matchup where Olimar should avoid scrapping directly at the tip of Lucas's normals, take midrange first with Pikmin Throw and long ground buttons, then keep juggling with Up Smash and Up Air to pressure both landing and recovery.

Matchup Summary (Win Condition and Game Plan)

Lucas is good at controlling the space just outside your reach with Forward Tilt, Forward Air, Z Air, PK Fire, and PK Freeze, so reckless approaches get pushed back by strong disjointed hitboxes. On the other hand, Lucas is not exceptional at close-range out-of-shield reversals, and his crouching hurtbox is still tall enough that Olimar can take over midrange if he lands Pikmin Throw and long grounded pokes first.
The full move table also shows that Jab 1, Jab 2, Jab 3, Up Tilt, Dash Attack, Forward Smash, Up Smash, Down Smash, Down Air, Side B, and Up B (2) are all easy for Olimar to punish with Grab (10f), OOS Nair (10f), OOS Fair (10f), OOS Uair (11f), and Up Smash (12f). Lucas’s Forward Tilt, Down Tilt, Forward Air, Back Air, Up Air, Z Air, Neutral B, and Down B are difficult to punish directly on shield, but those moves still function in close or midrange around Lucas’s body, so it matters more to stuff his movement first with Pikmin in front of him than to insist on frame-tight shield punishes.
The win condition is to hold onto purple or white Pikmin, show Pikmin Throw often enough to slow Lucas’s grounded movement and jumps, then keep farming landing traps with Down Tilt and Up Smash after you pop him up. You do not need to overcommit to absorbable projectiles just because of PSI Magnet. It is more stable to pressure from ranges where Lucas’s reflector and absorb are less relevant and force him to swing into Olimar’s grounded spacing.
For kills, prioritize Up Smash, Up Air, Pikmin Throw at the ledge, and Forward Air or ledge trapping against recovery. Lucas has multiple recovery routes with tether and Up B, but his routes below the ledge are still readable enough that Olimar gets more consistency by holding stage position, leaving Pikmin where Lucas wants to return, and finishing the stock on the way back up instead of chasing too deep.

Win Condition Checklist

  • Use Pikmin Throw to stop Lucas’s walking and jumping first, then layer Down Tilt, Up Smash, and Up Air onto the spot where he is forced to land.
  • When you block Jab 1, Jab 2, Jab 3, Up Tilt, Dash Attack, Forward Smash, Up Smash, Down Smash, Down Air, Side B, or Up B (2), answer with Grab (10f), OOS Nair (10f), OOS Fair (10f), OOS Uair (11f), or Up Smash (12f) so he does not get to reset for free.
  • After blocking Forward Tilt, Down Tilt, Forward Air, Back Air, Up Air, Z Air, Neutral B, or Down B, do not force a direct punish that will not reach. Rebuild midrange while maintaining Pikmin count and touch first again.
  • At kill percent, prioritize Up Smash, Up Air, Pikmin Throw at ledge, and stage-held traps against recovery rather than overcommitting below the ledge.

Actions to Avoid

  • Burning through Pikmin with repeated Side B and smash attacks without tracking lineup, then entering midrange with no meaningful pressure left.
  • Walking straight into the tip of Lucas’s Forward Tilt and Forward Air, then losing neutral and getting trapped in landing pressure.
  • Swinging after every blocked move even when the punish does not reach, which gives Lucas control over spacing again.
  • Chasing too deep below the ledge for a kill and letting tether recovery or PK Thunder scramble the position.
