This matchup is decided by whether Piranha Plant can stop Dedede’s huge, slow body with Ptooie above and Poison Breath across the floor and ledge before getting dragged into a direct exchange with Gordo Throw and the hammer.
Dedede’s weight, bair, up tilt, Gordo-ledge pressure, and armored Up B make lazy edgeguards unreliable, and Inhale can turn swallowed projectiles back on Plant, so obvious repeated Ptooie and Poison Breath timings get punished instead of respected.
At the same time, Dedede’s grounded movement and close-range scramble speed are poor, and as the table shows, Jab 1, Jab 2, Rapid Jab Finisher, tilts, Dash Attack, smash attacks, Fair, Side B, Up B, and Down B are all punishable by Grab (10f), OOS Fair (10f), or Up Smash (12f). Nair and Bair are the spots where Plant should stay disciplined and not force the swing.
The win condition is to vary the projectile rhythm, make Dedede move first with walk-and-shield pressure mixed in, and then cash out at the ledge by covering jump and normal getup with Ptooie and Poison Breath while Fair, Up Smash, or Up B catch the exposed Up B head and landing lag.

Win Condition Checklist
- Float Ptooie at the height where Dedede wants to jump or send Gordo instead of re-placing it straight in front of him. Use Poison Breath mainly to dirty the ledge and landing zones, and once Inhale is shown, do not fire again on the same rhythm.
- After blocking Jab 1, Jab 2, Rapid Jab Finisher, Forward Tilt, Up Tilt, Down Tilt, Dash Attack, smash attacks, Fair, Side B, Up B, or Down B, take the guaranteed punish with Grab (10f), OOS Fair (10f), OOS Uair (10f), Up Smash (12f), or Up B (13f).
- After blocking Nair or Bair, do not insist on the in-place punish. Put Ptooie or Fair on the landing route and the pullback jump instead, and avoid handing Dedede a free whiff punish on his safer buttons.
- At the ledge, keep Ptooie high enough to cover jump and ledge attack while Poison Breath dirties normal getup and the waiting space. Be ready to move inward only for roll coverage rather than overcommitting early.
- Do not try to hit the rise of Dedede’s Up B every time. Hold stage, catch the head that sticks up at ledge or the huge landing lag afterward, and make the ledge trap do the work.
Actions to Avoid
- Repeating Ptooie or Poison Breath from the same distance and height until Inhale sends the empowered projectile back at you.
- Swinging the fastest OOS option every time Nair or Bair touches shield and giving Dedede a free whiff punish into renewed Gordo pressure.
- Chasing too deep offstage for the kill and letting multiple jumps or armored Up B reverse the position and make your own recovery worse.
- Planting Long-Stem Strike or Up Smash in the obvious hammer range in front of Dedede and getting the slow startup called out by Forward Tilt, Bair, or Gordo coverage.
