Matchup Summary (Win Condition and Game Plan)
This matchup is about interrupting Ivysaur’s comfortable midrange before the vine spacing turns into ledge pressure and up-air kills. Ivysaur wants to fence with Forward Tilt, Down Tilt, Fair, Bair, and Uair while Razor Leaf forces the first pause. If Villager keeps walking directly into those vine tipper ranges, his weak close-range defense gets exposed very quickly.
Villager does have real ways to bend the pace, though. Pocket makes Razor Leaf much less free, and Ivysaur’s mobility is not strong once slingshot and Lloid Rocket force a stop. The table also shows that Jab 1, Jab 2, Rapid Jab Finisher, Forward Tilt, Up Tilt, Down Tilt, Dash Attack, all smash attacks, Nair, Fair, Uair, Dair, Neutral B, Side B, and Up B can all be answered by Villager’s OOS Nair, OOS Uair, grab, or Up Smash. Bair is the main blocked aerial that does not reward a forced immediate punish.
That means Villager should focus on showing Pocket often enough to slow Razor Leaf, then use slingshot and Lloid to make Ivysaur jump or shield first. Once Ivysaur is the one choosing a defensive option, Villager can cover the landing with Uair, Bair, or even Bowling Ball setup instead of trying to win a pure disjoint duel at center stage. The stable plan is not to outrange Ivysaur directly, but to make the vine spacing awkward and cash out once Ivysaur is forced to reset.
For stocks, edge pressure is more reliable than fishing for one smash read in center. Lloid Rocket, Bowling Ball threat, and Villager’s aerial coverage make high Vine Whip returns and ledge jumps much more manageable than fighting Ivysaur’s strongest ground range head-on. If Villager keeps the match about forcing recovery and landing decisions, the matchup becomes much more controllable.

Win Condition Checklist
- Show Pocket often enough that Razor Leaf cannot be thrown carelessly and Ivysaur loses a clean midrange starter.
- Use slingshot and Lloid Rocket to stop entering raw vine tipper range and force Ivysaur to jump or shield first.
- Punish Jab 1, Jab 2, Rapid Jab Finisher, Forward Tilt, Up Tilt, Down Tilt, Dash Attack, all smash attacks, Nair, Fair, Uair, Dair, Neutral B, Side B, and Up B on shield with OOS Nair (6f), OOS Uair (9f), Grab (10f), or Up Smash (12f).
- Do not force a shield punish after blocked Bair; keep the positional advantage and track the next landing, drift, or ledge escape instead.
- At the ledge, combine Lloid Rocket and Bowling Ball threat so jump, high Vine Whip recovery, and neutral getup all stay under pressure at once.
Actions to Avoid
- Walking straight into the tip of Ivysaur’s Forward Tilt, Fair, or Bair and taking the exact disjointed midrange fight Ivysaur wants.
- Letting Razor Leaf pass uncontested in situations where Pocket could have broken Ivysaur’s tempo and made neutral more awkward.
- Swinging after every blocked Bair anyway and giving Ivysaur a free reset into landing pressure or ledge carry.
- Backing away from edgeguard pressure and letting Ivysaur’s narrow but still exploitable recovery reset for free every stock.
