This matchup is about tempo more than about one clean neutral win. Wario’s air mobility gives him real chances to harass Steve before the setup is ready, but once Steve stabilizes iron, gold tools, or diamond gear, the threat from up tilt, up air, minecart, and fast kill options rises sharply and the whole pace gets much worse for Wario.
The frame table shows real shield punish opportunities whenever Steve commits. Jab, Dash Attack, Forward Smash, Up Smash, Down Smash, Neutral Air, and Down Air can all be punished by Up B (6f), OOS Nair (7f), OOS Fair (8f), or Grab (10f), so those touches should never go unanswered. The harder part is respecting the mostly safe up tilt, up air, and down tilt pressure instead of contesting them from the same height every time.
Wario should play this matchup through low aerial drift, airspace denial, and pressure that relocates the mining spot rather than through direct grounded scrapping. If he can jump over or around the block line, threaten with Nair, Fair, and Chomp, and convert the opening into ledge control before Steve upgrades, the matchup stays manageable.
For kills, do not wait only for Waft. Ledge Bair, minecart shield punishes, and landing traps matter because Steve’s recovery is long enough that reckless deep chases often lose positioning instead of ending the stock.

Win Condition Checklist

  • Keep pressuring the mining location with air drift, low Nair, Fair, and Chomp so Steve cannot mine in place for free.
  • After blocking Steve’s Jab, Dash Attack, Forward Smash, Up Smash, Down Smash, Neutral Air, or Down Air, punish with Up B (6f), OOS Nair (7f), OOS Fair (8f), or Grab (10f).
  • Against up tilt, up air, and down tilt, avoid forcing immediate retaliation from the same height. Reset above or around them and punish the next landing or mining restart instead.
  • Push Steve to the ledge before gold tools or diamond gear are established, so minecart and smash attacks are used under space pressure rather than in center stage.
  • Spread kill pressure between Waft, ledge Bair, and minecart shield punishes instead of waiting passively for one answer.

Actions to Avoid

  • Standing in front of Steve on the ground and repeatedly feeding into fast up tilt or down tilt pressure.
  • Using the same jump path over mining and block walls until Up Smash or anti-air traps are already waiting.
  • Letting blocked minecart or smash attacks go unpunished and giving the late-game resource economy for free.
