Luigi Matchup (Wolf)

Wolf vs Luigi

Wolf vs Luigi revolves around denying grab-started close-range scraps, pinning him down at midrange, and cashing out through landing traps and ledge pressure.

Matchup Summary (Win Condition and Game Plan)

Luigi’s close-range reward is extremely high. His grab routes, nair, down tilt, Super Jump Punch, and Luigi Cyclone can all swing the stock count immediately, so every repeated scramble at point-blank range makes Wolf’s lighter weight and weaker recovery matter more. If Wolf gets cornered and lets Luigi start that guessing game near the ledge, the matchup can snowball very quickly.
The other side of the matchup is that Luigi has clear mobility and range issues. Once Wolf holds midrange, Luigi has to take on real risk just to get in. The frame table reflects that too: Jab 1, Jab 2, Jab 3, forward tilt, up tilt, dash attack, all smash attacks, neutral B, side B, Up B (1), and down B are all clearly punishable by Wolf’s grab (10f), OOS Fair (10f), OOS Nair (10f), OOS Uair (10f), and Up Smash (13f). Wolf does not need to brawl with Luigi on Luigi’s terms.
The catch is that Luigi’s down tilt, nair, back air, up air, and zair stay relatively safe on shield. If Wolf forces an immediate punish after every blocked touch, he can easily whiff into grab or Up B. The stable plan is to stop Luigi’s walk-ins and Fireball advance with low Blaster and small retreats, force the jump first, then take the landing with fair, nair, up tilt, and up air.
For kills, staying on stage is more reliable than overchasing offstage. Back air and down smash at ledge, up air and up smash on jump from ledge, and waiting for the landing point of Green Missile or Super Jump Punch all let Wolf finish stocks without exposing his own recovery. Luigi’s recovery is readable enough that stage control is the cleaner way to cash out.

Win Condition Checklist

  • Use low Blaster and small dash-backs to stop Luigi’s walk, dash, and Fireball advance, then start the juggle once he is forced to jump with fair, nair, up tilt, and up air.
  • Punish Jab 1, Jab 2, Jab 3, forward tilt, up tilt, dash attack, all smash attacks, neutral B, side B, Up B (1), and down B on block with grab (10f), OOS Fair (10f), OOS Nair (10f), OOS Uair (10f), and Up Smash (13f) so close-range exchanges do not drag on.
  • After blocking down tilt, nair, back air, up air, or zair, do not force immediate OOS every time. Track Luigi’s drift, landing, or retreat instead and win the second contact.
  • At kill percent, stay disciplined at the ledge and finish from stage with back air, down smash, up air, up smash, or by covering the landing point of Luigi’s recovery moves.

Actions to Avoid

  • Trading at the range where Luigi’s grab and down tilt are already active and giving him one opening into a high-damage combo or Up B kill.
  • Swinging on shield after every blocked nair, back air, up air, or zair and whiffing into grab, mash, or reversal Up B.
  • Letting Luigi reset to a comfortable jump and landing cycle after Blaster pressure instead of taking the forced air path away.
  • Chasing too deep offstage for a kill and exposing Wolf’s side B and up B recovery to a reversal or edgeguard.
