Zelda vs Falco

Falco Matchup (Zelda)

Zelda vs Falco

Zelda vs Falco is a reactive control matchup where Zelda must hold center with Phantom, cut off Falco's jump-driven approach, and finish stocks by trapping his narrow recovery.

Matchup Summary (Win Condition and Game Plan)

This matchup turns on whether Zelda can keep stopping Falco’s jump path with Phantom and retreating aerials, or whether Falco gets to start vertical strings from laser pressure into up tilt or nair.
Falco can punish careless Din’s Fire use and early Phantom releases with Blaster and Reflector, but his horizontal chase and recovery mix are still limited, so Zelda should not overcommit to a straight projectile war and instead walk him into fair, bair, and up smash range behind Phantom.
On shield, forward tilt, up tilt, down tilt, dash attack, forward air, side B, and down B are the spots where Up B or up smash can cash out, while nair, bair, and uair stay mostly safe, so it is more stable to reset spacing and catch the next landing than to force a punish that is not there.
For kills, it is better to force Falco into side B or the long startup of up B, then let Phantom, Din’s Fire, and back air cover ledge and the return point instead of chasing too far offstage.

Win Condition Checklist

  • Do not stand still at Blaster range. Show Phantom first, force Falco to reveal jump or forward movement, and meet that entry with tipper fair or bair.
  • Whenever forward tilt, up tilt, down tilt, dash attack, forward air, side B, or down B touches shield, answer with Up B or up smash, and do not mix in panic swings after nair, bair, or uair that are not actually punishable.
  • Use Din’s Fire behind Phantom or near the ledge instead of spamming it in a straight zoning war, so Reflector comes out late and gives you a landing trap rather than free tempo loss.
  • Once Falco is offstage, watch side B travel and up B charge at the same time, and let Phantom plus a held back air cover jump, ledge getup, and the moment before he regrabs ledge.
  • If you get launched, do not default to the fastest panic landing. Vary drift and timing so up tilt, uair, and fair strings do not keep running for free.

Actions to Avoid

  • Do not lock yourself into obvious midrange Din’s Fire or early Phantom patterns and hand Blaster plus Reflector the pace of neutral.
  • Do not auto-pilot Up B after every blocked nair, bair, or uair, because that is how Falco gets empty landings, grabs, and up tilt or down throw starters.
  • Do not keep escaping straight upward and feed Falco the vertical routes he wants from up tilt, uair, and fair.
  • Do not chase too deep offstage and let side B’s meteor angle or bair reverse the position and put your own recovery at risk.
